France's new right-wing Prime Minister Michel Barnier started consulting all sides Friday to cobble together a government capable of mustering a majority in parliament after two months of political deadlock.
Macron’s announcement comes after weeks of deadlock following the parliamentary snap elections in July.
That history loomed in the background as President Emmanuel Macron appointed the 73-year-old Barnier on Thursday to take over from Gabriel Attal, France's first openly gay prime minister.
Barnier made the case for greater “justice” in France’s taxation system, but declined to further elaborate on whether that meant higher taxes for companies or wealthier individuals.
