Bebinca packed top wind speeds of 151 kilometers per hour (roughly 94 miles per hour) near its eye as it landed in the coastal Pudong district of Shanghai around 7:30 am (1:30 am CET).
More than 414,000 people had been evacuated ahead of Typhoon Bebinca's arrival with powerful winds and torrential rain.
Many businesses were already closed for the Mid-Autumn Festival public holiday and the city's 25 million residents were advised to avoid leaving their homes.
Shanghai was hit on Monday by the most powerful typhoon since at least 1949.
