Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky held high-stakes talks Friday following several attacks by the White House hopeful on the Ukrainian president as the looming American election raises questions over long-term U.S. support for ally Kiev in its war with Russia.
The two men met at Trump Tower on Friday amid a growing feud between Zelenskyy and Republicans that Ukraine fears could sabotage further US military aid if Trump wins in November.
But Friday, both men were, if not all smiles, at least only somewhat visibly awkward as they tried to paper over a central difference in their stances: Trump has declined to say which side he favors in Russia’s war on Ukraine, and Zelenskyy has insisted on a “just” end to the war that would preserve his country’s pre-conflict boundaries.
Biden has announced nearly $8 billion in military aid to Ukraine.
