Trump Says He Will Change Name of the Gulf of Mexico

Since his first run for the White House in 2016, Trump has repeatedly clashed with Mexico over a number of issues, including border security and the imposition of tariffs on imported goods.

Sheinbaum pointed to a map dating back to the 1600s which showed an early portrayal of North America with the name 'Mexican America' which had once been used for the region.

President Claudia Sheinbaum proposed using the 17th-century name in response to President-elect Donald Trump's comment he'd try to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico.

In response, Sheinbaum suggested renaming North America "América Mexicana," or "Mexican America," as a Mexican founding document from 1814 that preceded the country's constitution referred to it that way.
