Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg inspired celebration from some Republicans Tuesday when he announced changes to the company’s fact-checking and moderation programs.
The decision comes after years of criticism from supporters of President-elect Donald Trump, among others, that conservative voices were being censored or stifled under the guise of fighting misinformation, a claim professional fact-checkers vehemently reject.
The move to replace third-party fact-checking with user-written “community notes” similar to those on Trump backer Elon Musk’s social platform X is the latest example of a media company moving to accommodate the incoming administration.
Fact-checking has long been paraded as the holy grail of objectivity and truth, but the process is riddled with biases.
