Greenland's leader ready to talk to Trump

Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American. We want to be Greenlandic,

Egede emphasised Greenland's aspirations, saying

No, but we are ready to talk."

At a Copenhagen press conference, when asked if he had had contact with Trump, Egede responded

But that doesn't mean we are cutting all ties, all cooperation and all relations with Denmark,

he said

The debate on Greenlandic independence and the latest announcements from the U.S. show us the large interest in Greenland...Events which set in motion a lot of thoughts and feelings with many in Greenland and Denmark."

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said during the press conference

I personally believe that if we stand together, we are stronger in the global game,

she noted

The US is our closest ally, and we will do everything to continue a strong cooperation,

she said

When I have to talk to another country’s leader, I have to be together with the Danish ambassador. It’s things like these where we wish to have our own voice. That, I think, is legitimate, when one wants to build their county on those values,

Egede said

We don’t want to be Danes. We don’t want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders,

he told reporters on Friday following a lengthy meeting in Copenhagen with Danish commonwealth leaders
