North Korea on Friday released footage showing the test launch of its newest and largest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which has the ability to attack mainland United States.
Developing advanced solid-fuel missiles — which are quicker to launch and harder to detect and destroy in advance — has long been a goal for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The ICBM launched Thursday flew higher and for a longer duration than any other weapon North Korea has tested.
While questions remain over North Korea's ability to guide such a missile and protect a nuclear warhead as it reenters the atmosphere, the Hwasong-19, like North Korea's other latest ICBMs, demonstrated the range to strike nearly anywhere in the United States.
