DeepSeek raises national security concerns, U.S. officials say

On social media, the AI community expressed admiration for how DeepSeek's two open-source models either surpassed or matched the performance of rival products across a range of industry benchmark tests, in spite of tightened U.S. restrictions on China's access to advanced semiconductors and related technologies.

DeepSeek burst into public consciousness when the Chinese tech firm claimed to have made substantial progress in training its AI for a fraction of the cost of its American competitors and with a relatively low number of highly-advanced chips.

The Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) lab DeepSeek grabbed headlines and tanked the stock market with its announcement of a new AI model nearly equivalent to the United States’ most recent reasoning models but at a fraction of the cost.

Of course, DeepSeek can’t be blamed for this since it openly acknowledges its Chinese origins and operates within the boundaries set by the Communist system.
