Rubio arrives in Saudi Arabia before Russia talks to end Ukraine war

Starmer’s op-ed was published amid rising tensions between the US and Europe over what appears to be US President Donald Trump’s attempt to sideline his European allies ahead of eventual Ukrainian peace negotiations, and on the same days as a hastily convened emergency meeting with other European leaders was due to take place in Paris to discuss the issue.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his wife, Olena Zelenska, have arrived in the United Arab Emirates.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrives in Saudi Arabia on Monday (Feb 17) ahead of expected talks with Russian officials aimed at ending Moscow's nearly three-year war in Ukraine.

Leaders from Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark are expected in Paris, as well as Mark Rutte, the Nato secretary general, and Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission.
