
US economy shrinks in first quarter as Trump tariffs disrupt business

U. S. stocks are sinking following a discouraging report suggesting the U. S. economy may have shrunk at the start of the year, before most of U. S. President Donald Trump’s announced tariffs could take effect.

These movements were partly offset by increases in investment, consumer spending and exports.

BBC Newsnight 's Adam Fleming was forced to intervene as guests came to blows during the programme as they reacted to President Donald Trump's first 100 days in the White House.
