House GOP leader may look to Democrats to avert disaster — but that may only delay his fate
Senate Democrats quashed House Republicans' effort to force the upper chamber to put impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on trial, effectively letting the Biden administration official off the hook.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., proposed points of order after senators were sworn in as jurors to deem both of the House-passed articles of impeachment unconstitutional.
An outright dismissal of House Republicans' prosecution of Mayorkas, with no chance to argue the case, would be an embarrassing defeat for House Republicans and embattled House Speaker Mike Johnson, who made the impeachment a priority.
