Israel bombarded southern Beirut late on Saturday and early on Sunday, one day before it marks a year since the attacks orchestrated by Palestinian militant group Hamas that spiraled into a highly destructive war in Gaza and escalated tensions across Israel's northern border.
Huge explosions were seen in the Beirut skyline as Israel carried out more than 30 air raids across the southern suburbs of Lebanon’s capital.
The strikes came after days of Israeli bombing of Beirut suburbs considered strongholds for the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah, killing its leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and possibly his potential successor.
Israel on Saturday ramped up its punishing airstrikes on Lebanon, and for the first time since it began its assault on the militant group Hezbollah, it targeted the country's north.
