Conclave sees massive surge in viewership following Pope Francis’ death, jumps 283% to nearly 7 million minutes

The passing of Pope Francis has reignited public interest in cinematic portrayals of papal elections and the lives of popes, most notably in “Conclave,” currently showing in theaters, and Netflix’s 2019 movie, “The Two Popes.” Pope Francis, who led the world's 1.4 billion Catholics for nearly 12 years, died Monday at 88 after a battle with respiratory issues, despite brief signs of recovery and public Easter appearances.

The movie is called The Pope Answers and features him in a question-and-answer session with 10 young adults of different backgrounds and life experiences.

Both the key Italian actors in the cast, Isabella Rossellini and Sergio Castellitto, were particularly vocal in their praise and concern for Pope Francis.

In Edward Berger’s adaptation of a Robert Harris novel, from a script by Oscar-winning screenwriter Peter Straughan, the election of a new Pope is depicted as a gossipy affair, full of infighting and political maneuvering by cardinals jostling for power and leverage over their rivals.
