Indian doctors stage nationwide strike over colleague's rape and murder

Some Indian junior doctors remained off the job Sunday as they demanded swift justice for a colleague who was raped and murdered, despite the end of a strike called by a big doctors' association, while some other people held street protests.

Many of those protests have been led by doctors and other healthcare workers but also joined by tens of thousands of common Indians from all walks of life demanding action.

On Saturday, a nationwide 24-hour strike by tens of thousands of doctors brought all services to a halt across India, except for emergency medical care.

The response to the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at a Kolkata hospital has gone beyond the safety concerns of a local hospital to matters concerning the security of doctors, medical personnel and women everywhere.
