Air raid sirens sounded across Kyiv on Wednesday as Ukraine's capital prepared for a possible Russian airstrike that did not come.
The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv issued a warning Wednesday about a "potential significant air attack" and announced its closure, following Moscow's pledge to retaliate after Ukraine launched U.S.-supplied long-range missiles at targets inside Russia for the first time.
The United States decided to close its embassy in Kyiv on 20 November after receiving information about the threat of a major Russian strike on this day.
The precautionary step came after Russian officials promised a response to President Joe Biden’s decision to let Ukraine strike targets on Russian soil with U.S.-made missiles.
