Georgia will carry out a partial recount of ballots after claims of fraud in Saturday’s parliamentary elections.
In Moldova, which like Georgia has been granted EU candidate status, only a slim majority of voters backed anchoring the goal of EU accession in the constitution in a referendum this month and pro-Western President Maia Sandu faces a runoff vote after falling short of outright victory in a presidential election.
The President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, has almost finished her six-year term in what is largely a ceremonial position, yet the French-born politician has become far more than a figurehead over the past few years.
The closely watched poll saw the ruling party, Georgian Dream, win a majority of seats with 54% of all votes, followed at a distance by several opposition parties.
