Sarah McBride becomes the first out transgender person elected to Congress

Tonight is a testament to Delawareans that we are a fair-minded state where voters judge candidates based on their ideas and not their identities.

Speaking tonight Ms McBride said

Thank you, Delaware! Because of your votes and your values, I am proud to be your next member of Congress,

McBride wrote on X after the race was called by MSNBC and NBC News, though the Guardian relies primarily on the Associated Press, which has not yet called the race for McBride

We know throughout history that the power of proximity has opened even the most closed of hearts and minds,

McBride said to CBS News

I think that folks know that I am personally invested in equality as an LGBTQ person,

McBride said to CBS

It is a testament to Delawarians that the candidacy of someone like me is even possible.”

Ahead of Tuesday’s election, McBride spoke about what it would mean to be the first transgender person elected to Congress, telling CBS News

I wouldn’t be the first person in Congress to be part of a community that Donald Trump has said outrageous things about.”

Prior to her win, in response to questions about Trump, McBride told CBS

It’s the power of our presence that combats the mischaracterizations and the demonization that we see of a community that’s in the crosshairs of right-wing attacks,

I think we’re all going to be excited to see her, but also see those Republicans having to interact with her and treat her in a way they treat everybody else, and she has the same voice and same vote as everyone else,
