US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris greet reporter Evan Gershkovich at Andrews Air Force Base following his release as part of a 24-person prisoner swap between Russia and the United States, on Aug 1, 2024.
The three Americans were part of the biggest US-Russian prisoner swap in post-Soviet history, a trade which follows years of back-channel negotiations despite relations between Washington and Moscow being at their lowest point since the Cold War after Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine.
Not since the Cold War, when secret agents and political prisoners would be routinely exchanged on Berlin’s Bridge of Spies, have so many captives been traded.
Gershkovich was detained in Russia in March 2023 on espionage charges that both he and the U.S. government deny and sentenced to 16 years in prison last month.
