Kyiv launched a surprise offensive into southwestern Russia's Kursk region last Tuesday, capturing over two dozen settlements in the most significant cross-border attack on Russian soil since World War II.
The foray east, initially with a tiny contingent of around 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers and several vehicles, has driven out overstretched 'conscripts and irregular forces' and displaced tens of thousands of people in the biggest Ukrainian attack of the war.
Last week, Ukrainian forces entered Russia’s Kursk Oblast in a surprise for Moscow.
Russian authorities are scrambling to bring the situation in Kursk under control, a week after Ukrainian forces launched a surprise attack in the region that has left a swathe of Russian territory under Kyiv’s control.
