President Trump was in the Arab kingdom this week before travelling on to Qatar, announcing a $142 billion (£107 billion) arms deal with the Saudis alongside other investments the country’s crown prince said could eventually be worth $1 trillion.

The display of affection for a leader with a contentious history mirrored Trump's first term, when he forged an alliance with bin Salman that deepened through years of mutual flattery and dealmaking.

President Trump was treated to an elaborate royal welcoming to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia early Tuesday where he was greeted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and hundreds if not thousands of military, government and business officials.
