Given the weather forecast for the next 36 hours, Paris 2024 and World Triathlon are confident that water quality will return to below limits before the start of the triathlon competitions on 30 July,
The tests carried out in the Seine [on Sunday] revealed water quality levels that, in the view of the international federation, World Triathlon, did not provide sufficient guarantees to allow the event to be held,
Paris 2024 and World Triathlon reiterate that the priority is the health of the athletes,
We have had some rainfall but everything that has been put in place has worked,
It prevents overflows from occurring so I think we will reach a satisfying quality of the water very soon, but it will depend on the weather forecast as well,
As observed in July, with summer conditions, water quality in the Seine has improved significantly.
Following a meeting on water quality held this morning attended by Paris 2024, representatives of World Triathlon and their technical and medical delegates, Météo France, Drieat, the City of Paris and the Prefecture of the Île-de-France Region involved in carrying out water quality tests, a joint decision was taken to cancel the swim leg of the triathlon familiarisation which was due to be held on 28 July at 8am,
We’ve seen what were the dynamics of the Seine over the past few weeks, and that’s what makes us confident,
We are still very confident with the weather forecast for the next 48 hours, the water quality will improve,
Hopefully we get to swim, bike and run because I don't swim this much to just run and bike,
The rain that has fallen on Paris over the last 24 hours is likely to impact the quality of the water in the Seine over the next 24 to 36 hours,
We love mountain biking for the reasons that drive us to enjoy it for what it is,
It’s bland and I think they could have done a better job of making a more mountain bike course,
For the triathlon competition the team is very confident it will be able to have the swimming part in the Seine.”
While a reduction in familiarisation sessions would impact all competing nations, we have great confidence in the preparation we’ve done and know our athletes will be on the start line in the best possible shape to compete at their best,
